Christian I of Denmark was Christian VIII of Oldenburg. He was the son of Count Diderik (Theodorich) of Oldenburg and chosen to take over the Danish throne with the support of his maternal uncle, Duke Adolf of Schleswig. After the death of his uncle in 1560, Christian became Duke of Schleswig and Count of Holstein. He founded the University of Copenhagen in 1479. Christian I was a poor financial administrator, but his Queen saved the country from ruination. Progenitor of the House of Oldenborg and the present Danish royal family.
