Notes

Charlemagne won the war against the Longobards in northern Italy in 774 and the area became a part of the Frankish kingdom. He conquered northern Spain in 803 and won against the Saxons in northern Germany in 785 and against the Bavarians in 787. In the year 800 he received the crown of the 'Holy Roman Empire' from Pope St.Leo III. His last years Charlemagne spent in Aachen (Aix-la-Chapelle) where his court became the centre for a renaissance of classical culture. He tried to tie his big country together by introducing a better law system and civic administration. In order to protect the nation's borders, Charlemagne appointed margrafs (counts). Charlemagne is the chief character in the Rolands poem. Later generations saw in him the reestablisher of the old Roman empire and the fighter against heathens and champion of the Christian ideals.
