Planetary expeditions must be approved and provided by the Company in a corporate-dominated spacefaring future. For their own protection, exploratory teams are escorted by Company-supplied security androids.
However, in a culture where contracts are given to the lowest bidder, safety isn't a top priority. A team of scientists performing surface testing on a faraway planet is watched by their Company-supplied 'droid — a self-aware SecUnit that has hacked its own governor module and calls itself "Murderbot" (but never out loud).
Its only want is to be left alone long enough to discover out who it is, despite its contempt for mankind. However, when a nearby mission goes black, it's up to the scientists and their Murderbot to figure out what's going on.
